About this role
A WHRB (Waste Heat Recovery Boiler) DCS (Distributed Control System) Operator manages and monitors high-pressure steam generation and heat recovery processes from a central control room in industrial plants such as steel mills, sponge iron units, or captive power plants.
Key Responsibilities
DCS & Panel Operation: Monitor and control boiler parameters—including steam pressure, temperature, flue gas flow, and drum water levels—via DCS, SCADA, or PLC screens.
Start-Up & Shutdown: Execute safe start-ups, planned shutdowns, and emergency isolation procedures for WHRB units.
Alarm & Anomaly Handling: Respond to system alarms, troubleshoot process deviations, and coordinate corrective actions with field operators.
Water & Combustion Management: Regulate feedwater pumps, monitor de-aerator systems, and track chemical/DM (Demineralized) water parameters to prevent scale and corrosion.
Coordination & Logging: Maintain operational shift logs, record instrument readings, and communicate closely with field personnel and maintenance teams.
Safety & Compliance: Ensure operations comply with safety interlocks, environmental emission standards, and the Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR).
Required skills
Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a related engineering discipline). Certification: Valid 1st Class or 2nd Class Boiler Attendant/Operator certificate (where applicable for combined boiler-DCS roles). Experience: Typically 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience operating WHRB, HRSG, or AFBC systems in a power or steel plant. Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in reading P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), building control loops, and managing field instrumentation (flow meters, transmitters, and control valves).
