About this role
Operations Leadership: Direct end-to-end hot rolling mill and structural finishing operations, ensuring optimal daily output, high capacity utilization, and adherence to production schedules.
Yield & Cost Optimization: Monitor and improve rolling yields, minimize scale loss/scrap, and control thermal/electrical energy consumption (reheating furnace efficiency).
Roll Shop & Maintenance: Oversee roll pass design, roll shop operations, and implement Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) to prevent downtime of critical mill stands and machinery.
Quality Assurance: Ensure all manufactured profiles (TMT, Angles, Channels, Beams) meet stringent BIS, ASTM, and structural quality standards.
Safety & Compliance (EHS): Enforce strict safety protocols for hot metal handling, continuous shifts, and ensure complete compliance with Factory Acts and Pollution Control norms.
Team & Resource Management: Lead a cross-functional team of production engineers, maintenance crews, and shift operators; manage labor relations and ERP-based reporting (SAP).
Required skills
1. Technical & Metallurgical Mastery Hot Rolling Mill Operations: In-depth, end-to-end expertise in managing integrated hot rolling processes—from reheating furnaces (pusher or walking hearth furnaces) through roughing, intermediate, and finishing stands to cooling beds and shear lines. Product-Specific Expertise: Deep manufacturing knowledge of producing structural steel sections (beams, channels, angles) and long products / TMT re-bars to strict BIS, ASTM, or international quality standards. Roll Pass Design & Calibration: Oversight or working knowledge of roll pass design, groove design, calibration, and roll-change scheduling to minimize downtime and surface defects. 2. Operational Leadership & Plant Management P&L and Cost Control: Complete operational and financial accountability for the rolling mill, focusing on high conversion efficiency, minimizing metal loss/scrap, and optimizing power and fuel (coal/gas/electricity) consumption per ton of steel. Production Planning & Scheduling (PPC): Translating commercial order books into efficient rolling schedules based on size changeovers, steel grades (billets/blooms), and delivery timelines. Maintenance & Reliability: Directing comprehensive preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance programs for heavy machinery—including mill stands, gearboxes, flying shears, cooling beds, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems. 3. Quality Assurance & Yield Optimization Yield & Productivity Maximization: Tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) such as prime yield percentage, rolling efficiency, fuel consumption per ton, and labor productivity. Metallurgical Quality: Ensuring proper temperature control, micro-structure integrity, mechanical properties (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation), and dimensional tolerances. Safety & Compliance (HSE): Enforcing strict hot-metal safety standards, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) compliance, and adherence to state pollution control and factory acts.
